The Center for African and African American Studies in the Community
Our Home in Houston
Houston, which recently has been named the most ethnically diverse U.S. city, offers a rich environment for the further development of the pressing extramural commitments and perspectives common in African and African American Studies, including: the city’s deep and important history in the slavery and post-emancipation eras; in classic civil rights struggles; the region’s suburban nature; its particular southern, coastal socio-ecology; the outsized place of Texas in recent American politics; the second-to-none diversity of Houston’s black populations, as well as the productive exigencies provided by the city’s overall racial and ethnic diversity.
